The construction of a regional logistics depot for the Southern African Development Community (SADC) Standby Force in Botswana is underway and set to be operational by 2030. The depot is expected to enhance SADC’s readiness, enabling rapid deployment and addressing logistical challenges in peace support operations in countries like Mozambique and the Democratic Republic of the Congo. Despite raising $15 million of the required $45 million, SADC continues to appeal for international support while emphasizing the need for self-financing.

Mozambique’s Cabo Delgado Province has suffered violent extremism perpetrated by the Ahlu-Sunna Wa-Jama’a (ASWJ) armed group since 2017. One aspect that needs to be addressed is the Disarmament, Demobilization, Rehabilitation, and Reintegration (DDRR) of those ASWJ combatants that choose to return to civilian life.
